WHAT IS GVM?
Gross Vehicle Mass, or GVM, is the maximum legal operating weight of your vehicle when fully loaded.
This includes:
-
The vehicle itself
-
Driver and passengers
-
Fuel
-
Bullbars and winches
-
Canopies and roof racks
-
Suspension and protection equipment
-
Tools and work equipment
-
Luggage, camping gear and accessories
-
The towball weight from a caravan or trailer
As accessories and equipment are added to a vehicle, the available payload can reduce quickly. In many cases, a modified vehicle may be close to its factory GVM before passengers, luggage or towball weight are included.
WHAT IS GCM?
Gross Combination Mass, or GCM, is the maximum combined operating weight of your vehicle and anything it is towing.
This generally includes:
-
The fully loaded vehicle
-
The fully loaded caravan, boat or trailer
-
All passengers and equipment
-
Towball weight and towing accessories
It is possible for a vehicle to remain under its individual GVM and towing capacity while still exceeding its permitted GCM.
For customers who regularly tow heavy caravans, boats, machinery or work trailers, understanding both GVM and GCM is essential.
WHY VEHICLE WEIGHTS MATTER
Exceeding a vehicle’s approved weight limits may affect:
-
Vehicle safety and handling
-
Braking performance
-
Suspension and component wear
-
Tyre load ratings
-
Roadworthiness and legal compliance
-
Insurance coverage
-
Manufacturer warranty considerations
-
Towing stability
Many owners underestimate how quickly vehicle weight increases once accessories, passengers, fuel, luggage and towball weight are added.
A suitable GVM or GCM upgrade can provide additional legal carrying capacity, improved suspension performance and greater confidence when travelling or towing.

PRE-REGISTRATION & POST-REGISTRATION UPGRADES
Pre-Registration Upgrades
A pre-registration GVM upgrade is generally completed before a new vehicle is first registered.
These packages may be available under federal approval pathways and can allow the vehicle to be registered at its upgraded GVM from new.
Post-Registration Upgrades
Already own or drive the vehicle?
A post-registration upgrade may still be available through an approved state-based engineering and certification process.
Requirements differ depending on the vehicle, registration status, upgrade package and state or territory.
Fatbuilds 4x4 can help guide you through the available process for your vehicle.
IS A GVM UPGRADE RIGHT FOR YOU?
A GVM or GCM upgrade may be worth considering when your vehicle is used for:

Please provide:
-
Vehicle make and model
-
Year and variant
-
Registration status

Current accessories and modifications
-
Intended future accessories
-
Approximate trailer or caravan weight
-
How the vehicle is primarily used
Once we have this information, we can discuss the available options and recommend the most suitable next step.
Important Information
GVM and GCM upgrade availability, specifications and approval pathways vary depending on the vehicle, model, variant, registration status and jurisdiction.
Customers remain responsible for operating their vehicle within all applicable axle limits, tyre load ratings, towing capacities, manufacturer limits and approved vehicle specifications. An increased GVM does not automatically increase every other vehicle rating or towing limit.
Vehicle weighing may be recommended to accurately assess the vehicle’s current configuration and remaining payload.
